Learning Diary: SEO

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a the process of increasing the website traffic (both in quality and quantity) by increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine. So, explaining it in a very simple way, it’s a way to boost movement on your website to help your business/blog grow.

To undestand how SEO works, I found this graph called “Mozlow’s hierarchy of SEO needs.” that I think it describes the process and the nature of SEO very well.

Guide to SEO Basics

By optimizing your site it will be easier to deliver information to search engines so that your content can be properly indexed and displayed within search results. Which will result in getting the right audience and some fame to your products.

This post was created with the help of the teacher’s webinar, PowerPoint presentation and the materials acessible on Moodle.

Learning Diary: PowerPoint Video

We were learning about creating a PowerPoint video, which is a video created using PowerPoint. I created my video about my trip to Turkey last year, where I went with my family and some family friends. We spent a week there sightseeing, relaxing and just having a great time together.

What I’ve learned about the video is that is actually not that complicated, we can easily create a simple video in just a few moments. It’s great when you want to make your presentation stand out, I might start using it for my pitching events from the StartUp School!

The instructions posted by the teacher were very clear and useful, which made the process really easy and enjoyable. What I could use would be the access to an audio library for the assignment, but I used some copyright free music I found on YouTube.

Learning Diary: Image editing

Last week we got to learn about image editing and what tools should we use to make the most out of our pictures.

Here are some useful words and their definitions that helped me understand more of the image editing lingo:

  • pixels (px) – tiny square that has a specific color and is only seen when we zoom in
  • dimensions – height and width of the picture. There are different dimensions of pictures, for example: portrait, landscape etc.
  • resolution – details of the picture that allow to see it clear and in the best quality. It matters a lot when you try to change the size of the picture or print it.

There are two most common anf most recommended file formats:

  • jpeg – most commonly used for photographs. It uses the lossy compression which has high quality with a large file size.
  • png – used most often for graphics and illustrations, uses lossless compression with has higher quality than jpeg and has a bigger file size.

Here is an edit I made:

Learning Diary: LinkedIn

This week we’ve worked on our LinkedIn profiles. Before starting this course I already had a LinkedIn profile that we had to set up for a previous class and I’ve been quite active on the platform.

To create a great profile, we were given a checklist on how to do this. Here are some important components of this checklist: professional profile picture, interesting headline (containing keywords), location and industry, contact information, easy to read summary, skills and endorsements, educations and possible recommendations from co-workers and mentors.

I currently have 140+ connections, but my goal would be to have 250-500+ connections.

Learning Diary: WordPress

Last week and this week we were learning how to create a WordPress page. We have created the page by using teacher’s instructions. Once we’ve created the site, we sent the link to the teacher to evaluate it.

Additionally, we had to add some pages, such as Feed, About, Portfolio, Map, Links and Skills. It was to make the site more interactive and to get the most of WordPress. On the main page, we’ve customized the header, logo, added a little section about ourselves and make the site more aesthetically pleasing.

What really helped to create the website were the instructions from the teacher, but also the additional videos. I think it’s a very good idea to add those, because there are students who can’t get to the lectures and it’s a nice way for them to understand the material better.

We’ve also started writing our learning reports after getting the guidance from the teacher. We also had to make peer reviews of other student’s sites. It was very exciting to see what others were up to and how they customized their sites.

This post is a summary of the first part and my personal experience of it.

Learning Diary: the beginning

In this course I am willing to learn about ICT and how to use it in business environment. I would like to know how to make the most of my skills and develop them the best way I can.

My personal strategy is similar to the course objectives, I want to learn ICT by doing practical exercises and being active in class.

I would like to achieve a 4 or a 5, that’s why I want to work hard. I am motivated about the course and the learning objectives.

Before attending the course, I have participated in two previous offered in my degree program. This semester, I am also attending another course about ICT, which is virtual.

The previous courses were linked to what we’re doing now. We were using mostly Microsoft Office, writing reports, doing mathematics and statistics in Excel and such things. We’ve never created a website, so this is very exciting and something new.
